Testing color on real materials

Green Cosmos has carried out coffee-dye application trials on yarn, silk, wool and yak hide. Working with actual samples helps us assess whether a dye route can move from a color concept into material development. Yak Hide is included as a separate leather application alongside the textile trials.

Different materials, different expressions

The photographs document the samples produced in these trials. Yarn shows color through its bundled threads; silk reveals folds and surface texture; wool provides a textured fabric sample; and the yak hide sample shows a darker brown appearance. These images record individual samples photographed under their original conditions, rather than a controlled comparison of shade strength.

What the trials establish

The completed samples support the practical feasibility of using this coffee dye to color the tested materials at the sampling stage. They provide a basis for discussing color directions and selecting materials for further development. The result is specific to these samples and their trial conditions.

For a product brief, wash, light and rubbing fastness, repeatability and production conditions should be assessed on the selected material using agreed test methods. Those performance results will be added when supporting records are available.

From samples to a project brief

Partners can start with a material sample, a target color and the intended product use. We can then discuss a coffee-dye sampling route and define the evidence needed for the next stage.
